Very few things go for gold cap on my server, though sometimes some of the really rare mounts like the plagued proto someone will bid that immediately to ensure they get it. If you really want to win something, you need to be on at the end so you can evaluate the situation. I got the Heavenly Onyx cloud serpent for 1.5 million a few years ago, and a few weeks later, I saw it go for quite a bit less (somewhere in the 1-1.2 million range). How much stuff goes for also varies by the server and who's going for whatever the item is. Starting bids are usually in the 1k-20k range, though I think there are a few pets that were way overpriced that they lowered a bit. There's usually one or more pets and mounts. There's always an unclaimed container (those go for 150k or higher on my server). There's almost always at least one T3 piece up. Best I can tell is that there are several "pools" that the BMAH draws from. You can make class trials if you're going to pick up transmog, but beware the 3 hour limit and delete/remake or keep yourself logged out as long as possible so you don't accidentally win an auction and then get locked out of the trial. If you want things for cheap, make or transfer a character on a low pop server and pick up the stuff there. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Obviously the guy with millions won't be giving up so easily, but the smaller fries who don't have that much in their coffers will give up faster with a few scare tactics, like bidding up extremely high very quickly (instead of doing 10k -> 10.1k -> and so on, do 10k -> 30k -> 60k) to convince them you are willing to drop bombs to get the item, bidding past certain thresholds (bidding 31,000 instead of 30,000 because someone's limit could be 30,000), or rebidding immediately after being outbid (implies larger stores of money and not needing to run to the mailbox to take gold out).
